A little more about us

We’re Diane & Gary, and The Royal Oak has been our pride and joy since October 2018. Alongside our son Dan and daughters Zara & Sarah, we’ve worked hard over the years to build the reputation we’re so proud of today. As a family, we love welcoming visitors from near and far, offering a warm, friendly atmosphere and homemade food.

With over 400 years of history and a list of landlords dating back to the 1700s, The Royal Oak is full of character, charm and traditional country pub atmosphere. We’ve made lots of improvements over the years while taking great care to preserve everything that makes this pub so special.​

Whether you’re joining us for a hearty meal after a long countryside walk, popping in for a well-deserved drink or simply looking for somewhere to relax and unwind, we’ll do our very best to make you feel at home.​

 

Situated in the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park, we’re surrounded by some of the most beautiful walking routes and countryside in England and perfectly placed for exploring the Peak District

We’re just a stone’s throw from the spectacular Thor’s Cave and the Manifold Valley, with Dovedale, Ilam, Alstonefield, Ecton, Hulme End, Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock all within easy reach.

Alton Towers is also less than 30 minutes away by car.

We’re a popular stopping point for walkers and welcome muddy boots, weary legs and four-legged companions!

We simply ask that dogs remain on a lead and are kept off the furniture.

We accept both online and telephone reservations and will always do our best to accommodate walk-in guests.

 

At particularly busy times, we may not be able to answer the telephone straight away as we’re busy looking after our guests. Please leave us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

 

During the quieter seasons, our service times may operate on a reservation-only basis. This helps us plan our staffing, food preparation and stock levels, while minimising food waste and keeping our little family business running efficiently.

Over the next few months we are planning the re-opening of beautiful double bedrooms and we’re looking forward to welcoming guests to our comfortable accommodation, all fitted with an en-suite, smart TV and full access to Wifi at no extra cost. The perfect place to relax after a day exploring the Peak District, with good food and a friendly country pub right on your doorstep.

All welcome - So whether you’re a local, visiting the area for the first time or returning for another stay, we’d love to accommodate you. We may be a small, family-run country pub, but we pride ourselves on offering a genuinely warm and friendly welcome, where nothing is ever too much trouble.

Alongside our traditional hospitality, you can expect good, honest, homemade food, lovingly prepared and served with a smile. We believe it’s the little things that make a big difference.

Freshly Made, Homemade Pub Food

Many of you will already know that here at The Royal Oak, we pride ourselves on serving freshly prepared,

home-cooked pub food, made with passion and love in our own kitchen using our very own recipes.

Our menu offers a tempting choice of traditional pub favourites and something for everyone, including vegan and gluten-free options.

Along with our real hand out skin on chips we also offer homemade buttery mash potato with chives. Can't make your mind up between chips or mash? Don't worry as you can have a bit of both. All part of that little bit extra.

Our handmade burgers are all gluten free and prepared fresh on site, with a delicious choice of beef, pork, chorizo & chilli, minted lamb and veggie burgers. Our veggie burger is also vegan and made with all vegetables.

 

One of our signature dishes is our homemade Steak & Ale Pot Pie, packed to the brim with slow-cooked rump steak in a rich Titanic Plum Porter gravy. Other firm favourites include our homemade Chicken, Ham & Leek Pot Pie and our family-recipe Beef Lasagne, layered with a rich, tangy red wine Bolognese and topped with a creamy white wine cheese sauce.

For fish lovers, our Fish Pot Pie is a real treat, generously filled with smoked haddock and prawns in a creamy lemon and white wine sauce. This seasonal favourite is available from March until October.

We also serve fresh, juicy steaks and seabass, delivered daily, alongside plenty of other delicious dishes to tempt your taste buds.

With so much choice on our menu, we’re sure you’ll find something you’ll love!

 

A little note before visiting

Our last food orders are usually taken 15 minutes before the kitchen closes. If you’re planning to join us for a meal, we recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before our advertised kitchen closing time.

Our kitchen opening hours can be found on our website. Please also bear in mind that on quieter days we may close earlier than usual, so we always recommend booking ahead to avoid disappointment and to ensure we’re here ready to welcome you.

 

Drinks, Relax & Enjoy

Although The Royal Oak is predominantly a food-led country pub, welcoming tourists and guests staying in the local area, drinkers are always very welcome too! Whether you’re joining us for a quick pint, a relaxing glass of wine or a few drinks with friends, you’re more than welcome to pop in.

We have a lovely, cosy drinkers’ lounge complete with a warming log burner, along with undercover outdoor seating and a beer garden – perfect for relaxing and enjoying a drink after a walk around the beautiful Peak District.

Our bar offers a great selection of drinks to suit different tastes and budgets, including cold draught beers, traditional ales, premium and budget lagers, and ciders. We also have a good selection of red and white wines, ranging from affordable favourites to something a little more special. And for all the gin lovers, there’s a lovely selection of gins to choose from too!

 

Our Bar Opening Times - unlike our kitchen, we don’t have a set closing time for the bar. We generally close when things have quietened down and the pub is empty, although during the busy summer months we often stay open for longer.

If you’re planning to visit as a larger group for drinks after the kitchen has closed, please give us advance notice. This allows us to arrange additional staff and make sure we’re ready to welcome you.
